Getting a dog when you have children can be a stressful endeavor. Although we love our pets, the most important thing when introducing a new dog into the family is making sure that your children are safe at all times around the dog. While any dog can be trained to be loving and respectful of children, some breeds of dogs are more naturally gentle and loving towards children. No matter what breed you choose, you should always take precautions when bringing a new dog around children. The following breeds are known to be especially good for families:

Bernese Mountain Dog

If you're looking for a big, friendly, lovable dog, look no further than the Bernese Mountain Dog. This Swiss breed needs a moderate amount of exercise and playtime, which makes sense considering they were originally bred to be used as farm dogs. Bernese Mountain Dogs require regular brushing because their thick, silky coat tends to shed. They are considered gentle giants - with the right amount of obedience training, this easygoing breed could be the perfect fit for a lively family.

Beagle

Beagles are spritely and loving, with a demeanor and energy that will match your children's. Beagles make great companions because they are loyal and obedient, a trait that has carried on since this breed was used as a small game hunting dog. Beagles require regular exercise and plenty of love.

Collie

Loyal to the end, a collie makes a great family dog. Collies are known to be loving and devoted to their owners, especially small children. The collie will act as a protector and sidekick, whether you are walking around the block or lounging on the couch. This affectionate breed does need a moderate amount of exercise daily, and also needs to be brushed about once a week because of its thick and longhaired coat.

Golden Retriever

No wonder the golden retriever is one of the most popular breeds in America - its beautiful golden color and affectionate and loving personality are hard to resist. Families who want a larger breed dog often choose the golden retriever because they are energetic and loyal. Once used as a hunting dog, retrievers are known to be intelligent and devoted. This breed is friendly towards children and eager to please its owners.

Labrador Retriever

Much like the golden retriever, the Labrador retriever is known to be loyal and devoted. This breed is easily trained because it is eager to please its owners and become one of the family. Labs are active and versatile - they can be your hunting buddy or your cuddle buddy. With an even temperament and a family-friendly nature, a lab could be the perfect choice for your family.

Norwegian Elkhound

If you want a protector for your family, consider a Norwegian elkhound as your next family pet. Known to be affectionate and loyal to their owners, this breed does well with children, especially when introduced to them as a puppy. The Norwegian elkhound forms a strong bond with the members of its family, making it a great protector and companion.
